Connecting an Apple TV to an Ethernet Connection

These instructions are specifically written for 4th Gen. Apple TV, but overall process should work for older generations.


If you are starting from an Apple TV already registered on a Stanford Wireless network, (or one that has already been activated on any sort of network) perform the following steps:


  1. Open Settings.
  2. Navigate to the network sub-menu
  3. Under connection you will see Wi-Fi, and at the bottom of the list displayed, you will  The Apple TV defaults to a Wi-Fi connection if no devices are connected. To get the device to display its Ethernet Address, all you have to do is plug in an Ethernet cable between the port on the back of the device and an active ethernet port on your wall.
  4. A few seconds after doing this, the network type under connection should switch to Ethernet. 
  5. At the bottom of the list, the Ethernet address should be displayed at the bottom of the list displayed on the screen. 
  6. Use this ethernet address to register the device on Stanford’s network by navigating to and complete the registration of the device  following the appropriate instructions.
  7. Be sure to list to put the ethernet address under WIRED address. Select the actual building you plan on using the Apple TV in.
  8. Once registration is complete, wait 15 minutes, unplug all the cables from the back of the Apple TV. Wait 5 minutes, reconnect all the cables and your device should be all set!  


If you are starting from an Apple TV that has never been activated, you have to activate it first. 


  1. First, restore the Apple TV  by connecting it to a computer and following the restore instructions through iTunes. 
  2. Once you are done with this, you need to use a mobile hotspot to activate the Apple TV for the first time. 
  3. Use the Siri Remote to find the Wi-Fi network that matches your hotspot.
  4. Activate the device on the network.
  5. Once you reach the Apple TV home menu, you can follow the steps listed above.
